Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.
A Recent Example
A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
