The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
