Uche Sparks Comfortable Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, particularly after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion provided a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season proved outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
