Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that arise in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
