Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Placed Troops in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The chat group in question included details about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other officials in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Potential Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released later this week.
