Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
