A minimum of 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
